dc.description.abstractAn experiment was conducted at the Agrotechnology Field Laboratory of Khulna University, during Aman season 2007 to study the effect of nitrogen and spacing on the yield of the transplant aman rice cv. BR 23. The experiment comprised of four nitrogen levels viz. 0, 50, 100, 150 kg N ha⁻¹ and three spacings viz. 15 cm × 10 cm, 20 cm × 15 cm, 25 cm × 20 cm. The experiment was laid out in a Factorial Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Nitrogen level significantly influenced growth, yield and yield components except harvest index. Maximum number of effective tillers hill⁻¹(12.31), weight of 1000-grain (22.84 g), grain yield (4.574 t ha⁻¹), and straw yield (4.619 t ha⁻¹) were obtained with 100 kg N ha⁻¹. The largest panicle length (26.02 cm), unfilled grains panicle⁻¹(22.84) was obtained with 150 kg N ha⁻¹. It was observed that wider spacing (25 cm × 20 cm) produced the higher panicle length (26.08), unfilled grains panicle ⁻¹(21.44). Medium spacing 20 cm × 15 cm produced the highest number of effective tillers hill⁻¹(12.47), filled grains panicle⁻¹(109.8), weight of 1000-grain (22.60 g), grain yield 4.40 (t ha⁻¹) straw yield 4.34 (t ha⁻¹) and harvest index (50.53%). Results also showed that, 100 kg N ha⁻¹ and 20 cm × 15 cm spacing was the optimum combination to produce maximum yield of transplanted aman rice cv. BR 23.
