| dc.description.abstract | Salt tolerance of mungbean has usually been studied under optimal fertility conditions. The objectives of the present studies were to compare the response of mungbean to salinity when nutrients were limiting, adequate, or in excess to determine whether additional fertilizer could repair salt injury. Two sets of pot experiment were conducted at the Reserch Centre of Agrotechnology Discipline of Khulna University during April to June 2004. In all the experiments BARI mung 5 was grown with 0 and 75 dS m⁻¹ NaCl salinity. In the first experiment, the response of mungbean to three levels of fertilizer nitrogen 14, 40 and 80 kg N ha⁻¹ under saline condition was compared with that of recommend N level under nonsaline condition (control). In the second experiment, P levels were 20, 60 and 120 kg P ha⁻¹. Application of increased levels of N and P improved water relation of mungbean to some extent. The dry matter production in different plant parts decreased by salinity which was showed increasing tendency with higher levels of N and P. Salinity also decreased yield and yield attributes of mungbean seriously that was increased with increasing levels of N and P fertilization. Seed yield under saline condition was very low than that of control condition. N, P and K uptake decreased and Na uptake increased by salinity. Na uptake decreased and N, P and K uptake increased by increasing levels of N and P fertilization. It was concluded that the external application of major nutrient elements ameliorates the harmful effect of salinity on mungbean growth, to some extent, by improving the plant water relation and mineral ions accumulation. | |
