| dc.description.abstract | A field survey was conducted on Galda seed production and marketing in some selected areas of the southwest coastal region of Bangladesh. The main sources of Galda seed production are natural collection from the coastal rivers and hatcheries. There were a total of seven stakeholder groups in the production and marketing chain of the seed. They were the collectors, hatchery producers, farias, local depots, central depots and farmers. The farias collect the seed from the collectors; they supply the seed to the local depots and, rarely, to the central depots. Hatchery production is principally supplied to the central depots. The socio-economic conditions of the stakeholder groups revealed that the collectors and the farias are the most disadvantaged groups, while the hatchery owners are mainly NGOs and comparatively well-off people. The depot owners are also among the richest groups of people. The whole chain of production and marketing suffers from various sorts of limitations and problems. | |
