Abstract

The experiment was conducted at the Field Laboratory of Khulna University, Agrotechnology Discipline Bangladesh, from April to June 2011 to study the effects of Rhizobium inoculum and nitrogen fertilizer on the yield and yield-related characteristics of mungbean variety Binamoog-5. Three levels of Rhizobium were used: no Rhizobium, 50% of the recommended dose (0.75 kg/ha-1), and 100% of the recommended dose (1.5 kg/ha). Four levels of nitrogen were applied: no nitrogen, 50% (8 kg N/ha), 100% (16 kg N/ha), and 150% (24 kg N/ha) of the recommended dose. The experiment was arranged in a randomized complete block design with three replications. The results showed that almost all yield and yield-related characteristics, except 1000-seed weight, were significantly affected by Rhizobium, nitrogen, and their interaction. Among the Rhizobium treatments, the 100% dose (1.5 kg/ha) performed best, while 100% nitrogen (16 kg N/ha) gave the best results among the nitrogen treatments. The combination of 100% Rhizobium with 50% nitrogen produced the highest seed yield of 1.59 t/ha, followed by 50% Rhizobium with 150% nitrogen. The lowest seed yield was obtained from the control treatment without Rhizobium and nitrogen. Therefore, the study concluded that applying Rhizobium biofertilizer can save at least 50% of nitrogen fertilizer without significantly reducing mungbean yield.
