Abstract

A field experiment was conducted at the Agrotechnology Field Laboratory, Khulna University, Khulna during the rabi season from November, 2006 to February, 2007 to evaluate the effect of sulphur on yield and yield attributes of mustard. The study consisted of four levels of sulphur viz. 0, 15, 30 and 45 kg S ha⁻¹ and three mustard varieties viz. Sonali sarisha, BARI sarisha-9 and BARI sarisha-11. The experiment was laid out in the randomized complete block design with two factors. The results showed that among the tested varieties, BARI sarisha-9 performed well in cases of 1000 seed wt. (2.19 g), seed yield (2.36 t ha⁻¹) and harvest index (48.62 %). Application of 45 kg S ha⁻¹ produced highest number of siliqua plant⁻¹ (244.20), 1000 seed wt. (2.27 g) and seed yield (2.46 t ha⁻¹) but highest harvest index (43.36 %) was produced by application of 30 kg S ha⁻¹ which was statistically similar to 45 kg S ha⁻¹. The interaction effect of sulphur and variety was varied significantly at all parameters of yield and yield attributes except no. of seeds siliqua⁻¹. BARI sarisha-9 produced highest number of siliqua plant⁻¹ (294.86) and seed yield (2.75 t ha⁻¹) by the application of 45 kg S ha⁻¹ but 1000 seed wt. (2.44 g) and harvest index (50.67 %) by application of 30 kg S ha⁻¹.
