Economics of Gher Fish Culture Under Different Management Systems in Fakirhat Thana

Abstract

This study was conducted in Fakirhat Thana under Bagerhat district to determine the relative profitability of gher fish production under owner operated under self-finance, owner operated under mohazon finance and multi-owner operated management systems and also to find out the constraints which affect the large scale production of gher fish culture. For this purpose, necessary information on gher fish production were collected by direct interviewing method with the respondent farmers under different management systems. The profitability was calculated simply by costs and returns analysis. The relative performance of gher fish farming under the three different management systems was also determined through social, economic and technical factors. In pursuing the study, information on socio-economic characteristics of the farmers and particulars of fish ghers were also collected. The general finding of the lessons indicates that the highest per acre profitability amounted to Tk 36,195.65 by fanners of owner operated under self-finance management system and the lowest Tk 21,254.23 by the farmers of owner operated under mohazon finance management system. The imbalance of net profit of fish ghers under different management systems can be reduced by the proper application of necessary quantity and quality of inputs. The study undoubtedly hints that the fish culture in ghers under any management system is a profitable business in Bangladesh.
