dc.description.abstractAn experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of planting density and planting pattern on growth, yield and yield contributing characters of rice. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Growth parameters were recorded at 15-day intervals from 30 DAT to harvest, while yield and yield contributing parameters were recorded at harvest. Planting density significantly influenced plant height, number of tillers, leaves, dry matter accumulation, crop growth rate and relative growth rate. Lower planting density increased plant height and relative growth rate, whereas higher planting density increased tiller production, leaf number, dry matter accumulation and crop growth rate. Paired row planting generally performed better than single row planting. The highest number of effective tillers (386.7 m⁻²) was recorded from D₄ {(25 cm + 15 cm) × 10 cm (50 hills m⁻²)}. The longest flag leaf (29.10 cm) was obtained from D₇, while the longest panicle (24.65 cm), highest number of spikelets panicle⁻¹ (144.6) and filled spikelets panicle⁻¹ (129.9) were recorded from D₃ {20 cm × 20 cm (24 hills m⁻²)}. The highest 1000-grain weight (28.52 g) was recorded from D₉. The highest grain yield (10.91 t ha⁻¹), straw yield (8.583 t ha⁻¹) and biological yield (19.49 t ha⁻¹) were obtained from D₇ {(30 cm + 10 cm) × 10 cm (50 hills m⁻²)}. The highest harvest index (56.26%) was recorded from D₈ {(25 cm + 15 cm) × 15 cm (32 hills m⁻²)}. Overall, the paired row planting pattern with 50 hills m⁻², particularly D₇, was found to be the most effective for achieving higher growth and yield of rice.
