    Microplastics in Mystus gulio, Lates calcarifer and Hyporhamphus limbatus from the Sundarbans of Bangladesh

    This study investigated the abundance and characteristics of microplastics (MPs) in gastrointestinal tracts (GT), gill and muscle of three commercial fish species (Mystus gulio, Lates calcarifer, Hyporhamphus limbatus) from the Sundarbans of Bangladesh. The fishes were examined for MPs investigation following alkali digestion protocol, microscopic observations and chemical analysis by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscope (FTIR). MPs were detected in all parts of all fish species except the muscle of M. gulio. Positive relationship was found between MPs abundance and body weight of the fish species. A total of 499 MPs were found in the GT, gill and muscle (5 g) of three species with an average MPs abundance of 12.20 items/g in GT, 8.03 items/g in gill and 2.37 items/g in muscle, respectively. A remarkable number of MPs was identified in muscle of two fish species. Among the various shapes and colors of MPs, fiber (45–58.82%), and black (30.83–72.41%) respectively, were dominant. The dominant polymer identified by FTIR analysis was latex (17%) and ethylene vinyl acetate (16%) while high-density polyethylene (11%) and low-density polyethylene (11%) were second dominant type. The study results show the presence of MPs in fishes from the Sundarbans of Bangladesh that can be transferred through food chain to human.

    Effects of elevated temperature on fish sperm quality: A meta-analysis

    Climate change, particularly global warming, poses a great threat to animal reproduction, which is very sensitive to increases in temperature. Studies revealed that elevated water temperature could hinder sperm production, damage sperm functioning across generations and reduce sperm competitiveness in many species. Following a systematic review of the literature, a meta-analysis was performed to explore how the elevated water temperature would influence some selected sperm traits such as sperm density, morphology, motility, survival rate, velocity and volume in different fish species. The PRISMA screening process was followed and 33 studies were finally eligible for the meta-analysis. The meta-analyses showed that sperm density, survival rate and velocity were significantly affected by the elevated water temperature, while sperm morphology, motility and volume were not significantly influenced by it. The sperm density data revealed a significant negative effect size because of elevated water temperature, whereas sperm survival rate and velocity showed a significant positive effect size. Overall, the findings suggest a clear evidence of profound influence of elevated water temperature on some sperm traits in different fish species that may affect fertilization success and offspring fitness of these species.

    Influence of Biofloc Technology on Water Quality Parameters in Aquaculture: A Meta-analysis

    Biofloc technology (BFT) is an environmentally friendly aquaculture technique in which water quality parameters maintenance and monitoring are the essential practices aiming at the success of the growing cycles. Studies revealed that improving water quality parameters in BFT and maintaining the safety range of the parameters could help to increase the growth performance of cultured species. Following a systematic review of the literatures, a meta-analysis was performed to explore how some important water parameters such as pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), nitrite (NO₂-N), nitrate (NO₃-N), ammonia (NH₃-N), total ammonia nitrogen (TAN), total suspended solids (TSS), and alkalinity were influenced by different BFT systems. The PRISMA screening process was followed and 33 studies were finally eligible for the meta-analysis. The meta-analyses showed that NO₂-N and TSS were significantly affected by BFT, while pH, DO, NO₃-N, NH₃-N, TAN, and alkalinity were not significantly influenced by this system. The analyses revealed that NO₂-N had a significant negative effect because of BFT, whereas TSS showed a significant positive effect. The study also revealed some publication bias in which few experiments of some studies showed extremely positive and negative effect sizes because of BFT application in the system. Overall, the findings suggest a clear evidence of profound influence of BFT on the water quality parameters in different aquaculture systems, suggesting for the future development of BFT for sustainable and environmentally friendly aquaculture production.
