Abstract
Free radical scavenging activity in the muscle of fifteen species of different feeding habit fishes were evaluated using both qualitative and quantitative method. Thin layer Chromatography (TLC) method was used for qualitative analysis. DPPH scavenging analysis reveals IC 50 of about 1266.02 ug/ml (Rhinomugil corsula), 963.46 ug/ml (Hypophthalmichthys molitrixy; 267.70 ug/ml (Puntius tieto), 965.75 ug/ml (Labeo bata), 1678.96 ug/ml (Puntius gonionotus), 327.69 ug/ml (Channa striatus), 346.32 ug/ml (Channa punctatus) ,2138.52 ug/ml (Notopterus chitala), 1757.17 ug/ml (Notopterus notopterus) , 1170.29 ug/ml (Mystus aor), 600.89 ug/ml (Pampus chinensisi, 872.19 ug/ml (Scatophagus argus), 397.72 f..lglml (Anabas testudineus), 154.45 ug/ml (Ctenopharyhgodon idella) and 530.69 ug/ml (Mackerel sp). In both the qualitative and quantitative method, ascorbic acid was used as positive control. Generally, herbivore fishes are supposed to get high antioxidant component as they consume mainly plant material and plants are the main source of antioxidant. But, in this experiment, no strong relationship was found among the feeding habit of fish and antioxidant activity. Two herbivore, two carnivore and one omnivorous fishes showed high antioxidant activity in this test. Being very common and rich in antioxidant, Channa striatus, Puntius ticto, Anabus testudenius, Ctenopharyhgodon idella and Channa punctatus can be used in our daily diet.
