Abstract
Shrimp hatcheries often be set with diseases, mainly the bacterial infection and antibiotics are widely used for prevention of disease. Presently, beneficial bacteria (probiotics) are used to prevent diseases instead of antibiotics and increasing the production. In the present study a twenty seven (27) days experiment was conducted to determine the effect of probiotics on total bacterial load and specific pathogenic Vibrio spp. in shrimp (Penaeus monodon). Two types of probiotics were applied viz; feed probiotic (PJtO-2) and water probiotic (PRO- W) for the juvenile rearing of P. monodon nursing system which was compared with control culture tanks (without probiotics). Total bacterial count was found higher in shrimp treated with feed probiotics (Tl) (2.75±1.3)xl0^7 CFU/g) compared to control group («S.9±O.8)x 10^6 CFU/g) as well as in case of water body it was higher in T2 («4.2±O.5) x 10^6 CFU/ml) where only water probiotics (PRO~W) was used. In contrast total Vibrio spp. in shrimp juvenile was found to have lowest in T3 «(1.37±O.8)X10^3 CFO/g) and Tl«4.8±2.4)x10^3 CFU/g) compared to control «(l.02±O.6)x10^4 CFU/g) and T2 «1.79±O.8)xl04 CFU/g). Vtbrio spp. was also 4 lowest in Tl «7.2±3.8) x 10^3 CFU/mI) on water body where only feed probiotic was used but Vibrio spp. was observed higher in T2 and T3 because of using water probiotic and combine application of feed and water probiotics compared to control treatments (C). So from the results it might conclude that probiotics had no effect on water body it was only effective in shrimp's body. The reason was might be the use of feed probiotic and combination of both probiotics used individually in the treatment T1 and T2 .
