Abstract

The objectives of this investigation were to seek out the commonly used antibiotic residue level of nitrofurans and chloramphenicol in cultured shrimp in south west region in Bangladesh. 90 samples were collected randomly from various fish farm of different Upazillas of Khulna, Satkhira and Bagerhat districts during August-December, 2017, whereas each district was contained thirty samples. Antibiotic residues level present in the shrimp muscles were detected using ELISA by the Fish Inspection and Quality Control Wing of the Department of Fisheries of Khulna. To collect information about type of feed and fertilization status questionnaire interviews were performed during sample collection from the respective farmers. Antibiotic residue data showed all nitrofuran metabolites like SEM, AOZ, AMOZ, AHD and CAP present in all samples in which SEM was highest in Satkhira district while lowest in Bagerhat district. In case of AHD highest residue were found in Bagerhat and lowest residue were detected in Satkhira district. Additionally, AOZ and AMOZ and CAP were highest found in Khulna, Satkhira and Bagerhat district while lowest observed in Khulna, Khulna and Bagerhat district. The overall results revealed that nitrofuran metabolites and CAP residue present in all samples within the MRL with the exception of 6.67%, 3.33% and 10% samples of Khulna, Bagerhat and Satkhira district respectively. Our study result also revealed that contamination of nitrofuran metabolites and chloramphenicol were more found in shrimp farms where commercial feed was used rather than those with home-made feed.
