Effect of Different Management Practices on the Production Performance of Tiger Shrimp (Penaeus monodon)

Abstract

Economic feasibility of shrimp culture practiced in the southern coastal districts of Bangladesh was studied on randomly selected 45 ponds between March 2006 and October 2006. The water quality parameters, growth performance, and cost-benefit aspects were investigated and analyzed. In addition to economic feasibility, the technical aspects of shrimp farming were also investigated. In the semi-intensive culture system, the highest temperature, alkalinity, salinity, DO, and pH were found to be 34°C, 190 mg/L, 19 ppt, 9 ppm, and 8.5, respectively, while the lowest values were 24°C, 110 mg/L, 11 ppt, 5 ppm, and 8.1, respectively. In the improved traditional culture system, the highest temperature, alkalinity, salinity, DO, and pH were found to be 34°C, 190 mg/L, 20 ppt, 9 ppm, and 8.5, respectively, while the lowest values were 24°C, 110 mg/L, 9 ppt, 5 ppm, and 8.0, respectively. In the traditional culture system, the highest temperature, alkalinity, salinity, DO, and pH were found to be 34°C, 140 mg/L, 18 ppt, 8 ppm, and 8.8, respectively, while the lowest values were 24°C, 90 mg/L, 7 ppt, 4 ppm, and 8.0, respectively. In the semi-intensive culture system, the highest stocking density was 117,647 PL/ha in S12 pond and the lowest was 69,231 PL/ha in S15 pond, with an average stocking density of 85,024 PL/ha for both the first and second crops. In the improved traditional culture system, the highest stocking density was 50,000 PL/ha in M6 pond and the lowest was 10,405 PL/ha in M14 pond, with average stocking densities of 20,614 PL/ha for the first crop and 19,713 PL/ha for the second crop. In the traditional culture system, the highest stocking density was 37,502 PL/ha in T14 pond and the lowest was 833 PL/ha in T2 pond, with average stocking densities of 13,698 PL/ha for the first crop and 10,230 PL/ha for the second crop. The highest production rates were 2,638 and 2,638 kg/ha in S8 and S9, 902 and 706 kg/ha in M6, and 212 and 154 kg/ha in T14 for the first and second crops, respectively. The average production rates were 1,952 and 1,952 kg/ha in the semi-intensive culture system, 379.99 and 343.96 kg/ha in the improved traditional culture system, and 64.23 and 90.73 kg/ha in the traditional culture system for the first and second crops, respectively. Through cost-benefit analysis, it was found that an investment of Tk. 1 generated profits of Tk. 0.31, Tk. 2.40, and Tk. 0.93 in traditional, improved traditional, and semi-intensive culture systems, respectively.
