Abstract
Hybridization is conducted for the production of hybrid vigor and often regarded as quick method of increasing production. A 72 day study was carried out to determine heterosis in Mrigal (Cirrhinus cirrhosus) by comparing growth of the hybrid (strain of the river Padma X strain of hatchery) with that of the pure-bred. The fertilization and hatching rates were assayed and found to be lower in hybrid than in parents. Hatchlings were reared in earthen nursery ponds for 70 days. Growth in weight and length were measured for comparison and the analysis showed significant differences (P < 0.05) in the growth rates between the hybrid and the pure-bred, which produced 30.51 % heterosis. The results obtained can be considered as preliminary in strain crossing and needs further work in this line in future.
