Abstract

The growth performance of Tetraselmis chuii, was studied using three nutrient media viz. (i) Walne’s or Conway, (ii) TMRL and (iii) Miquel’s, designated as Treatment-1 –3 (T-1 -3) respectively, at laboratory condition for 41ˢᵗ days at 1600-2000 Lux light intensity. The culture was conducted in 1L transparent plastic bottle with an initial cells density of 10 × 10² cells /ml. with three replicates of each treatment maintaining constant temperature and salinity of 25°C and 30 ppt respectively with continuous aeration and illumination. T. chuii cultured in T-2 showed significantly (P < 0.05) higher growth with a mean peak density (169.00 ± 1.36423 × 10² cells/ml), on the 22ⁿᵈ day of culture, than that of T-1 (150.44 ± .52997 × 10² cells/ml) and T-3 (127.11 ± 1.01986 × 10² cells/ml) on 16ᵗʰ and 23ʳᵈ day respectively. Stationary growth phase among the Treatments varied from 16 to 27 days (T-1: 16-27 days; T-2: 16-23 days and T-3: 18-26 days) after which declining phase started and very few number of individual found alive at 41ˢᵗ day of culture. It resembles that TMRL media is suitable for the culture of Tetraselmis chuii.
