Abstract
The main purposes of the study were to determine the effect of botanical extracts on the control of brinjal shoot and fruit borer (BSFB) and to find out the best BSFB resistant variety of brinjal. Two experiments were conducted; first experiment was carried out at Prof. Purnendu Gain Field Laboratory of Agrotechnology Discipline, Khulna University (KU), Khulna during the period from December 2013 to June 2014 and the second experiment was conducted in sack at the Germplasm Centre, Agrotechnology Discipline, Khulna University, Khulna during February 2014 to August 2014. In the first experiment six botanicals and control were used as seven treatments. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD), with 3 replications. There were 7 treatments viz., T₀ = Control (only water), T₁ = Neem leaf extract, T₂ = Neem oil, T₃ = Mahogany oil, T₄ = Mahogany (oil + cake), T₅ = Garlic extract and T₆ = Tobacco leaf extract. The brinjal variety 'Makra' differed considerably for treatment variations in terms of crop growth characters as well as yield and yield contributing characters. Data were collected on total numbers of shoot, total numbers of infested shoot, percentage of shoots damage, percentage reduction of shoots infestation, numbers of larvae per infested shoot, total numbers of fruits, percentage of fruits damage, percentage reduction of fruits infestation, numbers of larvae per infested fruits, cost of production, gross return and benefit cost ratio (BCR). In all the parameters Mahogany (oil + cake) showed the best performance followed by Neem oil and the lowest performance was observed from Control (only water).
In the second experiment thirteen varieties were used as treatment. This is a one-factor experiment that was laid out in CRD using thirteen varieties with five replications. The varieties were V₁ = BARI begun-1, V₂ = BARI begun-4, V₃ = BARI begun-5, V₄ = BARI begun-6, V₅ = BARI begun-7, V₆ = BARI begun-8, V₇ = BARI begun-9, V₈ = BARI begun-10, V₉ = Makra, V₁₀ = Muktokashi, V₁₁ = Lalita, V₁₂ = Hazra, V₁₃ = Chaga. Data were collected on total number of shoot, total number of infested shoot, percentage of shoot damage, percentage of shoot infestation reduction, numbers of larvae per infested shoot, total number of fruit, percentage of fruit damage, percentage of fruit infestation reduction, numbers of larvae per infested fruit. The maximum numbers of fruits was observed in V₁ and minimum in V₉ and in V₁₀. Percent of fruit infestation was maximum in V₁₀ (Muktokashi) and minimum in V₄ (BARI begun-6).
From the present study it was found that Mahogany (oil + cake) showed the best result and BARI begun-6 showed the highest performance against brinjal shoot and fruit borer.
