Abstract

SUMMARY: A survey and a laboratory experiment were conducted to assess the losses of mango due to post-harvest diseases. For conducting survey three markets namely Baro bazar, Gollamary, Dacbangla and 50 respondents (fruit sellers) were selected. From the result of survey, it was found that majority of the mango sellers were middled aged(44%) followed byyoung aged (26%) and old aged (30%).The majority (36%) Of the fruit seller (mango)belonged to the secondary education category. While, most (86%) of the fruit seller (mango) belonged to the nuclear family and a large proportion (90%) of the fruit seller (mango) belonged small to medium sized family involved in marketing activities. The maximum (48%) fruit seller (mango) were high experienced. The majority (56%) of the fruit seller (mango) faced seasonal imbalance (temperature, cloudy weather, heavy rain, diseases of mango etc.) whereas most (78%) of the fruit seller (mango) faced difficulties due to diseases.58% had low knowledge about mango because all most could not know how diseases were affected or not so their knowledge power about fruit selling is knowledge very low. Majority (72%) of the fruit seller faced low problem. According to the respondents, the losses of mango were highest due to Stem End Rot disease 7.38% and 6.24% due to Anthracnose disease, 0.23% due to Aspergillus rot and 0.87% due to other causes (storage, excessive rain, transport, high temperature, cracks etc.). In the laboratory, during storage condition, the highest (88.33%) loss of mango was reported from stem end rot of Himsagar, while lowest (44.04%) was in the stem end rot of Amrapali. Moreover, the highest (76.78%) diseases incidence and percent disease index (74.56%) was observed from stem end rot of Himsagar. Two fungal diseases (Anthracnose, Stem End Rot) were identified as the causes of fruit losses.
