Abstract
The study was conducted to compare the biological and economical feasibility of monoculture of Macrobrachium rosenbergii and its polyculture system with carps (Labeo rohita and Catla catla). The study was conducted from 1st June to 1st December 2002 at Fakirhat Thana of Bagerhat district. The study was observed the following attributes: growth, survival rate, production and income. In monoculture, the initial weight of prawn was 4.13 ± 0.15 g and in polyculture system the average initial weight of prawn, rohu and catla were 4.10 ± 0.10, 68.0 ± 3.39 and 73.33 ± 3.05 g respectively. The final average weight of M rosenbergii were 103.03 ± 6.47 and 92.83 ±3.55 g in mono and polyculture ponds respectively. The final average weight of L. rohita and C. calla ware 278.56 ± 10.37 and 262.81 ± 11.62 g respectively in polyculture system. In both culture systems, fertilizer and supplementary feed were used. In monoculture, the stocking density of Macrobrachium rosenbergii was 55/decimal. In polyculture, the numbers of prawn were 35/decimal where catla and rohu were 10 and 10/decimal respectively. The average growth rate of M. rosenbergii in mono and polyculture system was recorded 0.54 g/day and 0.49 glday. In case of catla and rohu it was 1.05 g/day and 1.6g1day respectively. The survival rate of M. rosenbergii in mono and polyculture was found 65% and 75% respectively where catla and rohu was 90%. The total production of prawm in mono and polyculture system was 906.8 and 605.18 kg/ha respectively where the production of catla and rohu in polyculture was 584.2 and 619.1 kg/ha respectively. The average production cost in mono and polyculture system were 171397 Tk/ha and 167371 Tk/ha respectively. The gross income was 255650: and 295066 Tk/ha in case of mono and polyculture system whereas the net income was 84252 and 127694 Tk/ha respectively. The growth rate of M. rosenbergii was higher in monoculture than the polyculture system. From the above study it is understood that though GaIda showed faster growth in monoculture, the polyculture of M. rosenbergii is said to be economically more profitable and feasible in the present culture system.
